Apple announces new Mac Pro, iMacs and Mac mini

A quiet, but very much anticipated update of Mac Pro, now based on Nehalem Xeons, iMac speed bumps and NVidia graphic cards and Mac mini with more of the same + Firewire 800 instead of 400.

Airport Extreme and Time Capsule got updated too, now offering simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band networking.

For years, Mac users have long been rightfully smug about their platform's relative immunity to virus and malware attacks, but it's inevitable that those days will eventually come to an end. (As the Mac gains in popularity, it also earns more attention from malware developers, and it's this lack of malware being actively developed, not some special, inherent security, that have really kept the Mac a "safe" platform for the time being.)

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

No wonder Jobs refused to give the keynote. All we get is iWork & iLife updates and a facelifted 17" MacBook Pro. Oh well, DRM-Free iTunes too.
